The dark grey, introduced on 12 July 1937, replaced the old Reichswehr or Feldgrau No. 3 dark green. Since then, it has been assumed that the fighting vehicles were mostly in the shade of buildings or trees to avoid visual reconnaissance, which is why this almost black color was changed. This also explains the name of the color shade, Shade Grey, which was in use at the time. A third of the tanks, trucks or guns that were now painted dark gray were spotted with Dunkelbraun Nr. 45. However, on 31 July 1940, this instruction was again revised by Army Notice No. 864 so that all vehicles were now painted again in dark gray RAL 7021 840 B2 No. 46 in one color. Dark gray RAL 7021 remained the main color for all major military vehicles until the spring of 1943, when it was changed to dark yellow RAL 7028.
