The Daimler armored vehicle was developed based on the Daimler reconnaissance vehicle. The Daimler reconnaissance vehicle is small and lightweight, and the Daimler armored vehicle is a larger version equipped with a Tetrarch tank two-pound gun turret. As a reconnaissance vehicle, it incorporated some of the most advanced designs of its time, and became one of Britain's best armored fighting vehicles during World War II. A prototype was produced in 1939; however, problems with the transmission due to its weight delayed its service until mid-1941. A total of 2,964 of this vehicle were manufactured by Daimler. They had fully independent suspension and are four-wheel drive. The planetary gear transmission inside the axle allows for very low gear ratios in the lowest gear; its reliability over rough terrain made it ideal for reconnaissance and escort missions.
